12.05.05 Cassie Bryson, above center, reads to children during "Literacy Day" Erskine women host "Literacy Day" for children Members of Chi Lambda Sigma Women and the education honor society Epsilon Sigma Tau welcomed some 30 children and their parents to a "literacy day" in McCain Library Saturday. In a service project collaboration that came about through friendships among Erskine students, some of whom are members of both groups, the Chi Women provided refreshments and sent publicity flyers to a local elementary school, and Epsilon Sigma Tau members selected the books and conducted activities with the children. Epsilon Sigma Tau President Cassie Bryson, a senior from Gastonia, N.C., was pleased with the turnout. "We had about half community children and half Erskine faculty and staff children, so that was a good response," she said. Bryson said some parents were amazed at how attentive their children were as students read to them. "Several of them said their children had a great time and asked us to have another event like this," she said. In addition to reading to groups of children, Epsilon Sigma Tau members offered crafts and face painting. Several parents also read some of the available books to their children. "A big thing we wanted the parents to realize is that we have more than 500 books in the children's section of McCain Library," Bryson said, noting that a number of works of children's literature have been ordered recently. About 80 students at Erskine College are education majors, according to Professor of Secondary Education Dr. Maggie Emery. Since becoming president of the education honor society, Bryson, who is majoring in early childhood and elementary education, said, "My main goal for our organization has been to raise funds to renovate the education lab." She said the group presented a request to the Parent Association Council. "We received some money from the Parent Council, and our department said they would match those funds," she said. Bryson is also interested in focusing on service projects, and Epsilon Sigma Tau will work on more of them during the spring semester.
