AMS President Ashley Pressley, a senior from Beech Island, headed up the group, which included junior Tiffany Bell of Iva, freshman John Burgess of Florence, junior Marquita Donaldson of Iva, and junior April Jakes of Effingham. They visited with the residents, hosted a buffet table, delivered cards to all the residents, and placed holiday baskets in several lobbies in the center. Pressley, who is a member of the Erskine Gospel Choir, sang "Amazing Grace" and received applause and thanks from the residents. Many recalled previous visits in which AMS members offered musical performances. "We just came for the music," one of the residents joked. The Rev. Roy Beckham led the residents in singing, "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" to show their appreciation to the students. The Association of Minority Students is affiliated with the National Association of Black Students and Black Students at Christian Colleges. In addition to their service activities, the group sponsors Black History Month activities on campus. |
