Secret Santa participants pose for a picture

Gift exchange gives exam week a festive start

By Davey Morgan ’07

The Secret Santa party was Erskine freshman Elise Eoute's idea. "This way, everyone gets presents and no one misses out," she said.

So, with final exams looming, students who wanted to participate filled out a slip of paper listing their name and favorite things and placed the slips in a hat. Everyone drew the name of the person for whom they would be a "Secret Santa."

One-dollar gifts were sneakily distributed Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, everyone brought wrapped $10 gifts to the party and placed them under the tree in the Living Hope Room in Watkins.

Freshman Andy Whitfield told everyone at party, "Remember the blessing Jesus gave. It's all about the fellowship."

Some 25 Erskine College students grabbed Chex mix, brownie cheesecakes, and sodas and sat down at the tables, while Whitfield read the story of Christ's birth, then prayed. Afterwards, everyone opened his or her Secret Santa gifts.

Freshman Craig Goodwin and others with digital cameras photographed the fun and fellowship. Asked whether he liked taking the pictures, Goodwin joked, "Yes. It helps me connect to the inner me."

Some students loved opening their presents. "That's phenomenal!" freshman Matt Lewellyn said when he opened one of his packages.

"You rock!" exclaimed Grace Washam, a freshman known around campus for her bagpipe playing. She received a T-shirt depicting her dreaming of famous bagpiper Tyler Fry.

Freshman Meagan Albert was also excited as she opened her gift. "Oh, dude, velvet posters! That is sweet!"

"It's a cool thing. It's good that we don't have to worry about buying presents for everybody," freshman Josh Grimm said.

"It's a great time of fellowship and fun," said Lewellyn.

Whitfield thinks everyone on campus should participate in Secret Santa next year. "It brings togetherness," he said.
