La Howe Elects New Board Chairman

At the winter quarter meeting of John de la Howe
School's board of trustees, Westly D. McAllister of
Mt. Carmel was elected chairman.
Appointed to the board in 1989, McAllister's
election to this office follows the leadership of
F.E. Ebie Grier of Greenwood, immediate
past board chairman.
Grier was appointed to serve on the board in April
1987 and was elected chairman in April 1990.
McAllister is a 1985 graduate of Cambridge Academy
where he received the Nelson Cromer Service Award.
He is a 1989 graduate of Erskine College, where he
served as student body president and was the
recipient of the American Legion Medal Service Award.
An active member of the McCormick community,
McAllister serves on the boards of the S.C.
Cattlemen's Association (also as past president),
S.C. Forestry Association and the Clemson University
State Extension Advisory Council.
He is past board member of the S.C. Chapter of the
Nature Conservancy and Erskine College Alumni
Association, member and past member of the S.C. Farm
Bureau Commodity Committee, Abbeville County
Cattlemen's Association, Abbeville County Forestry
Landowners Association, member and past chairman of
the McCormick County Extension Advisory Council, and
the member and past president of the McCormick County
Cattlemen's Association and the McCormick County
Forest Landowners Association.
He is a past president of the McCormick County
Historical Society.
McAllister's volunteer activities include the
Willington-Mt. Carmel Volunteer Fire Department,
where he also serves as treasurer, and the Boy Scouts
of America having earned Eagle Scout status himself.
He is the elder in the Mt. Carmel ARP Church and a
member of Gideons International.
A partner in the family business of McAllister
& Sons, McAllister and his wife, Angel, reside in
Mt. Carmel.
Appointed by the governor, the board of trustees
meets quarterly to provide governance and direction
to the programs administered at John de la Howe
School for South Carolina's children and families.
Other board members are Grier, Frances B. Stogner
of Greenwood, Elizabeth B. Davis of Orangeburg, (vice
chairman), Dr. Sylvester E. Williams III of
Greenwood, Frances P. Mickey Lindler of
Lexington, Diane Brock of Anderson (secretary) and
James Victor of Aiken.
