Aulos Ensemble Shakespeare, Swing, And A Soprano Headline Spring Arts Events Erskine College will host a return visit from the Shenandoah Shakespeare Express; a performance by SwingDance America; and an evening with J.S. Bach featuring the Aulos Ensemble and guest soprano Julianne Baird as a new arts season begins. Also planned are several exhibits at the Bowie Arts Center plus a succession of Erskine students, faculty, and guest artists in concert throughout the spring term. "An Evening in the Home of J.S. Bach," to be held Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall, will offer an "original instrument" performance of the great baroque composer's works by the Aulos Ensemble with assistance from soprano Julianne Baird. Admission is $5, and free with Erskine I.D. On March 1, the Shenandoah Shakespeare Express makes a stop at Erskine to stage "Romeo and Juliet" in their own fast-paced fashion beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Lesesne Auditorium. General admission is $5, and free with Erskine I.D. Just a few days later, on March 4, SwingDance America will perform in Lesesne Auditorium at 7:30 p.m., with jitterbug, lindy, jive, West Coast swing and even Carolina shag on the program. Admission is $8 for adults, $5 for youths, and free with Erskine I.D. The Bowie Arts Center will display works by the late Betty Lewis of Abbeville beginning Jan. 2 and running through Feb. 12, and a second exhibit, "Palmetto Hands," sponsored by the South Carolina State Museum, will run from Feb. 1 through March 1. An exhibit of works by State Rep. Harry Stille and watercolorist Genie Wilder will be on display from Feb. 12 through March 21, and a reception for the Stille/Wilder exhibit will be held Feb. 23 from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Bowie Arts Center. The Abbeville County Public School Art Show will showcase local children's art from March 4 through March 21, and "Sequined Surfaces," featuring Haitian art, will open April 2 and remain on display through May 21. The Department of Music highlights for the spring term include performances by Erskine music students offering their junior and senior recitals; Erskine music professor Dr. Matthew Manwarren in concert on Feb. 25 at 8 p.m. in Memorial Hall; pianist Milton Stern and Friends March 5 at 8 p.m. in Memorial Hall, part of the Brawley Chamber Music Series; the Schow Duo March11 at 8 p.m. in Memorial Hall; Erskine alumnus Mac Frampton as Koonts-Lampton Keyboard Artist March 14 at 8 p.m. in Memorial Hall; a Choraleers concert at the Due West ARP Church April 4 at 8 p.m.; Erskine Sinfonia in concert April 18 at 8 p.m. in Memorial Hall; and a spring choral concert by the Erskine Choraleers, Chamber Singers, and Women's Chorale May 7 at 8 p.m. in Memorial Hall. Spring Arts Calendar 2002 Jan. 2-Feb. 12 Paintings by Betty Lewis of Abbeville, Bowie Arts Center Lynn Stewart of Roswell, Georgia, daughter of the artist, has described the works of the late Betty Lewis as "commonplace objects elevated to works of art by someone who saw beauty in life's simple treasures." She died in 1993. Feb. 1-March 1 "Palmetto Hands," Bowie Arts Center This is an exhibit sponsored by the South Carolina State Museum featuring three-dimensional works by artisans from throughout the state. Feb. 12-March 21 Works by Harry Stille and Genie Wilder, Bowie Arts Center Known as the "artful lawmaker," Rep. Stille will display his works in conjunction with one of the state's most recognized watercolorists. Genie Wilder has won numerous awards and honors for her art while also fulfilling her role as wife of Rep. Wilder of Laurens. Stille says "I don't know if my art is good or bad. I just like design and color." Feb. 19 The Aulos Ensemble and Julianne Baird, Soprano, Memorial Hall, 7:30 p.m. "An Evening in the Home of J. S. Bach" with the Aulos Ensemble, whose "original instrument" performances have been enjoyed in New York City and throughout the world. Guest soprano Julianne Baird joins with the members of the Ensemble, which was formed in 1973 and is made up of five graduates of the Juilliard School. Admission: $5. Feb. 23 Reception for Stille/Wilder Exhibit, Bowie Arts Center, 2 p.m. The public is invited to meet the artists and enjoy the exhibit. Feb. 25 Matthew Manwarren, Pianist, Memorial Hall, 8 p.m. Erskine Professor of Music Dr. Matthew Manwarren will offer a program of works by Scarlatti, Beethoven, and Prokofiev. Feb. 28 Erskine Students in Recital, Bowie Chapel, 4 p.m. The Student Artist Series features Erskine music students in recital. March 1 Shenandoah Shakespeare Express, Romeo and Juliet, Lesesne Auditorium, 7:30 p.m. The Shenandoah Shakespeare Express (SSE) returns to Erskine as part of its 2001-2002 "Blush and Swoon Tour." SSE performances are characterized by high energy, spare sets, brisk pacing and universal lighting in which the audience can both see and be seen by the actors. General Admission: $5. March 4 "SwingDance America," Lesesne Auditorium, 7:30 p.m. SwingDance America features swing dance styles spanning three generations and encompassing regional variations of the dance from all across the United States. March 14 Koonts-Lampton Keyboard Series, Mac Frampton, Memorial Hall, 8 p.m. Erskine alumnus Mac Frampton returns to his alma mater to present a solo piano recital. April 2-May 21 "Sequined Surfaces," Bowie Arts Center Textiles sewn with sequins and beads have a sacred purpose in Haiti, the poorest country in the Western hamisphere. This glittering display of 51 Haitian Voudon flags powerfully embodies the symbiosis of tribal beliefs from Africa and the rituals of colonial French Roman Catholicism April 4 Choraleers in Concert, Due West A.R.P.
