Ying Quartet


Shakespeare, Sculpture and a String Quartet

Highlights of the spring arts schedule at Erskine College include a performance by the Ying Quartet Feb. 8 at 8 p.m. in Memorial Hall; a Feb. 20 staging of Twelfth Night by the Shenandoah Shakespeare Express at 7:30 p.m. in Lesesne Auditorium; a February exhibit of works by Felix Bauer, Erskine professor emeritus of art and music; and a sculpture exhibit beginning April 16 by Brookgreen Gardens stone carving instructor Ken Smith.

Rounding out the offerings are student recitals, exhibits of art work by area students and others, and several traveling exhibits and guest recitals.

The first exhibit scheduled for display in the Bowie Arts Center, sponsored by the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia, begins Jan. 10 and is entitled "Legacy of the Middle East." This exhibit focuses on advances in human in human culture that originated in the ancient Middle East: agriculture, domestication of animals, the founding of cities and city-states, the beginnings of such technologies as metalworking and glassmaking, the invention of the wheel, and the creation of counting and writing.

The first arts event scheduled for spring term is a Jan. 30 piano recital by Erskine junior David Coleman, winner of the South Carolina Music Teachers National Association Collegiate Competition, at 8 p.m. in Memorial Hall.

January

10-31 —  "Legacy of the Middle East," Bowie Arts Center

This exhibit, sponsored by the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia, focuses on the revolutionary advances in human culture that originated in the ancient Middle East: agriculture, domestication of animals, the founding of cities and city-states, the beginnings of such technologies as metalworking and glassmaking, the invention of the wheel, and the creation of counting and writing.

23 — 8 p.m. Student Recital, Memorial Hall

David Coleman, winner of the South Carolina Music Teachers National Association Collegiate Competition, presents his junior piano recital.

 

February

1-28 — "Works by Felix Bauer," Bowie Arts Center

Felix Bauer, a graduate of the Institute of Graphic Arts and Research in Vienna, Austria, was professor of art and music at Erskine College from 1946 to 1979. His exhibit includes drawings, oils, watercolors, and etchings produced before 1954.

8 — 8 p.m. "The Ying Quartet" (Fine Arts Series), Memorial Hall

The members of the Ying Quartet, all siblings born and reared in Chicago, Ill., began their career as an ensemble in 1992 as the first recipients of a National Endowment for the Arts grant to support chamber music in rural America. They lived in the farm town of Jesup, Iowa (population 2000) for two years, performing in schools, businesses, churches, community centers, and homes. They now live in Rochester, N.Y., serving as Quartet in Residence at the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester, where they design and direct a chamber music curriculum.

20 — 7:30 p.m. "Twelfth Night," Shenandoah Shakespeare Express, Lesesne auditorium

The Shenandoah Shakespeare Express returns to Erskine in their 2000/2001 "Charm Your Tongue Tour," performing Shakespeare's Twelfth Night under conditions closely approximating those for which Shakespeare wrote. This energetic ensemble uses universal lighting, allowing the actors to see the audience, limits the cast to about 11 actors who double roles, and uses no elaborate sets or scenery.

22 — 4 p.m. Students in Recital, Bowie Chapel

The Department of Music presents students in individual performances.

 

March

3-31 —  "Quilts and More," Bowie Arts Center

This is an exhibit of works from "Focus on the Upstate," a quilting group based in Greenville, and will feature art quilts, bed quilts, and wall hangings in traditional, abstract and bargello designs. A reception is to be held at the opening March 4, from 2 to 4 p.m.

5-26 —  "Abbeville County Schools Art Show," Bowie Arts Center

This is an annual exhibit of works by children in the Abbeville County Public Schools.

15 — 4 p.m. Students in Recital, Memorial Hall

The Department of Music presents students in individual performances.

15 — 8 p.m. Faculty/Guest Artist Series, Memorial Hall

Ian Bracchita and his jazz quartet perform a concert of old favorites.

19 — 8 p.m. Koonts-Lampton Keyboard Series, Memorial Hall

Pianist Eugene Barban presents a solo recital.

20 — 8 p.m. Sinfonia Spring Concert, Memorial Hall

The Erskine College instrumental ensemble "Sinfonia," under the direction of Dr. Stephen Emmons, presents its annual spring concert.

 

April

5 —  8 pm Choraleers Spring Concert, Due West ARP Church

The Erskine College Choraleers, directed by Dr. John Warren, present their annual spring concert.

10 —  8 pm Student Recital, Memorial Hall

Tobé Frierson, percussionist, and Lori Gilstrap, soprano, present their junior recitals.

16-30 — "Sculpture by Ken Smith," Bowie Arts Center

An instructor in stone carving at Brookgreen Gardens, Ken Smith has studied in Europe and the United States. His works have been purchased by Brookgreen Gardens as well as by many private collectors.

17 —  8 pm Students Recital, Memorial Hall

Jennifer Blackwell, soprano, presents her senior voice recital.

19 —  8 pm Koonts-Lampton Keyboard Series, Memorial Hall

Pianist Eugene Pridonoff, a faculty member of the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, is featured in recital.

23-30 — "James House Exhibit," Bowie Arts Center

James W. House, a 1989 graduate of the Art Institute of Atlanta, uses mixed media in a realistic style to explore individual relationships in today's society. Fans of House's work include many Erskine students who know him through his position with Aramark Food Services at Moffatt Dining Hall on the Erskine campus.
