Erskine Goes To "TV Land" For Homecoming 2003

Erskine College celebrated Homecoming 2003 with a "TV Land" theme Saturday, in a day highlighted by the crowning of senior Kate Cothran of Anderson as homecoming queen during halftime of the men’s 4-0 soccer victory over Coker College. The Erskine women took a 3-0 victory over Coker.

Dr. John R. Hunt of Anderson, Class of 1965, and Emelyn Boyte Greene, of St. Petersburg, Fla., Class of 1957, received the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award and the Mary Mildred Sullivan Award, respectively, and Erskine capped the day's festivities by inducting five new members into the Flying Fleet athletic Hall of Fame.

This year's Hall of Fame inductees were pitcher Norman Chandler, Class of 1953; athletic trainer Jeff Gephart, Class of 1983; stellar third baseman Gary Mixon, Class of 1984; men’s basketball standout Joey Rice, Class of 1994; and women's basketball record-setter Attala Young, Class of 1995.

Saturday's events began with 21 riders entering the second annual Red Eye Ride, a bicycle variation on the Red Eye Run held on Erskine Alumni Day in the spring. The fastest male rider in the eight-mile race was 13-year-old eighth grader Andrew Evans, son of Dr. and Mrs. Bill Evans of Due West, with a time of 25:25. Evans also took first place in last year's race. Winner among the women in the race was Erskine junior Garreth Smoak of Honea Path, with a time of 30:57.

An Alumni Association meeting followed the bike race, with Eleanor Chesnut Richardson of Flat Rock, N.C., presiding. Sullivan Award winners Hunt and Greene were honored at the meeting. The Sullivan Awards, given by the New York Southern Society, are presented each year to a man and woman who have "shown a spirit of love for and helpfulness to their fellow human beings."

"John Hunt is a man who has given his life to the community of Anderson," said Erskine president Dr. John Carson. "He is highly respected as a caring surgeon and a gentleman."

"Erskine has meant a lot to me through the years," said Hunt, who has served on the Board of Trustees at Erskine and is currently Vice-Chair of the Anderson Area Medical Center Board. "When I left here 38 years ago, I was really a pretty naïve young man, but Erskine taught me the basics of communicating and living a life of integrity."

Carson said Greene "personifies the Erskine College tradition," and cited her fervent support of Erskine athletics, noting she once traveled with the basketball team to the NAIA tournament in Kansas City.

"My family has been so blessed by the many, many gifts Erskine has given us," said Greene, who has also served on the Erskine Board of Trustees. "I wasn't too happy about it at the time, but I'm very thankful that 50 years ago last month, my parents dropped me off at Carnegie Hall on the Erskine campus."

Also at the alumni meeting, a special presentation of 100 red roses in celebration of her upcoming 100th birthday was given to Lois McClintock "Mackie" Ellis, a 1923 graduate of the Woman's College at Due West, which later merged with Erskine College. Ellis is a resident of the Due West Retirement Center.

A musical presentation by the Erskine Gospel Choir, led by Erskine graduate and admissions counselor Tobé Frierson, concluded the meeting.

For the homecoming parade at noon, each Erskine class took a vintage television series as its theme, and characters from such shows as "The Andy Griffth Show" and "Gilligan's Island" were brought to life by costumed students on each float. The senior class won the spirit contest, and the sophomores won first place for their float based on "The Beverly Hillbillies."

Cothran was crowned homecoming queen by Erskine College President Dr. John Carson and last year's queen, Laura Williams of Norway. Senior Julie Brown of Charleston was first runner-up and sophomore Erica Johanson of Morganton, N.C., was named second runner-up.
