DUE WEST, S.C. - The Erskine College Athletic Department celebrated its finest year since moving into NCAA Division II and Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference play at a year-end banquet Friday recognizing individual athletes and team accomplishments. Two Erskine teams - women's cross country and women's soccer - claimed conference championships, and three teams - men's cross country, men's tennis and baseball - were conference runner-ups. "Five of our 10 athletic programs finished either first or second," said Athletic Director Chip Sherer. "No other school in the CVAC can say that. It has been a fantastic year."
Jordan was named team MVP of the women's soccer team and the women's basketball team. A four-year starter at point guard on the basketball team, Jordan scored more than 1,000 points in her career. She also started at second base for the women's softball team her senior year. CVAC Coach of the Year John Showalter led the Erskine women's cross country team to its first-ever CVAC title with the help of three first-team All-CVAC runners, sophomore Julie Hunt of Lake Wales, Fla., sophomore Sandy Page of Columbia and freshman Amy Hendricks of Irmo. Page was named team MVP. CVAC Coach of the Year Billy Lesesne led the women's soccer team to its first-ever CVAC title and best record ever. The Lady Fleet finished 15-2-1 overall and 11-1 in the CVAC. Jordan and freshman Virginia Murphy of Greenville were named first team CVAC All-Conference and first team All-South Region. Three players made the All-CVAC second team - senior Bromley Whitt of Greer, junior Melissa Schwier of Charleston and sophomore Ellen Cotter of Greenville. Senior Becky Fletcher of West Columbia, Jordan, Whitt, Schwier and Liz Baldwin of Davidson, N.C. were named to the CVAC All-Tournament Team.
Led by All-CVAC first team players Villy Iltchev of Bulgaria and Pratik Shrivastava of India, Erskine posted a 19-7 overall record entering the national tournament as the 15th seed. The Fleet finished CVAC play at 11-2, and won 12 of its last 13 matches entering the national tournament, with the only loss coming in the championship of the CVAC Tournament. Iltchev was named team MVP. Iltchev and junior Warren Bray of Greenville also received CVAC Player of the Week honors. The Erskine baseball team finished the season with a 16-34 overall record, 9-18 in the CVAC, and entered the conference tournament as the No. 8 seed. But the Fleet stunned No. 1 Coker in the first round and reached the finals before being knocked off by Mt. Olive. Four players were named to the CVAC All-Tournament Team - senior Brad Small of Lancaster, junior Brandon Coker of Greenville, junior Darrell Howery of Tampa, Fla., and sophomore Joe Whitmer of Canton, Ohio. Whitmer was also a second All-CVAC player and Small was named team MVP. The men's cross country team finished second for the third year in a row, led by first team All-CVAC runners Trent Humphreys of Saluda and Jamie Williams of Rock Hill, both juniors. Williams was named team MVP. Other awards included:
