Senior
Idris Mayo
Erskine
Men's Basketball To Open Friday
Mark Peeler enters his fifth season as head coach of the Erskine men’s
basketball team.
The Flying Fleet will try to continue the momentum from last year’s
team that finished 14-16, the most wins since the mid-1990’s.
Erskine went into
the conference tournament as the eighth seed and pulled off the biggest
upset of the season, defeating sixth-ranked Queens University of Charlotte,
to advance to the semifinals.
Senior Bobby Isom (Rock Hill/Northwestern High School),
a pre-season All-CVAC team member, will be counted on to provide leadership
to a very young Erskine team. The lightning-quick Isom averaged 11.9 points
per game as a junior last season and made a team-high 53 three-pointers.
Idris Mayo (Hillsborough, N.C./Orange High School) is
a versatile player who will play both guard and forward. As a junior,
Mayo averaged 4.3 points and 2.5 rebounds a game while playing in all
30 games.
Adam Powell (Hollywood/St. Paul’s Country Day)
returns for his senior season, and will be counted on to help provide
leadership and intensity for the team.
Junior Kevin Parker (Boiling Springs/Boiling Springs
High School) returns after missing the last five games of the 2002-03
season with an injury and looks to pick up where he left off. Parker averaged
5.0 points and 2.9 rebounds, while dishing out 39 assist in 25 games.
Lindokuhle Sibankulu (Nelspriut, South Africa) will join
the team in January and should make an immediate impact, bringing experience
to the post position.
Sophomore
Jay Waring (Florence/Florence Christian School) will be counted
on to play both inside and outside this season. Last season, Waring averaged
6.17 points and 2.9 rebounds with 10 steals, while playing in all 30 games.
Harry Skipper (Columbia/Ridge View High School) is a
solid player who will be called upon to provide quality depth.
Sophomores Ryan Gibadlo (Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins Hill
High School) and Justin Welch enter their first season
with the Fleet. Welch is penciled in as the starter in the post, while
Gibadlo could see playing time because of his excellent shot.
Redshirt freshman Matt Odom (Six Mile/Daniel High School)
is looking to come back after suffering an injury in the third game of
the season last year. Odom is another versatile player who can play both
inside and outside for Erskine.
Eoghan White (Dublin, Ireland/Colaiste Eanna) and Craig
Williams (Paris, Ky./Bourbon County High School) are talented
young big men who will see immediate action.
Guards Jason Winecoff (Greer/Eastside High School) and
Milferd Brock (Simpsonville/Christ Church) are lightning
quick and could help relieve Isom of some of the ball-handling pressure
this season.
Freshmen Matt MacDonald (Anderson/T.L. Hanna High School),
Drew Wallace (Gray Court/Laurens High School), and Mark
McCall (Candler, N.C./Enka High School) will all look to gain
valuable experience this season at the guard position.
Eric Schoenbaechler (Greenville/Shannon Forest Christian School)
will be able to use his height and versatility to play inside or outside.
The Fleet open the season Nov. 21 when they host Presbyterian College
at 7:30.
