Photography Exhibit on Display at Arts Center
DUE WEST, S.C. Elizabeth Bishop, a 1998 recipient of a grant from the South Carolina Arts Commission for her photo essay Snapshots in Asia, displays this exhibit at the Bowie Arts Center on the Erskine College campus beginning Jan. 4 and continuing through the month of February.
Bishop, currently a classroom teacher at Union High School, Union, S.C., took the photos while traveling in Asia as a member of two Fulbright-Hayes groups, one in China and one in India; as a Rotary International Fellow in the Philippines; and while teaching English in Vietnam for the English Language Institute/China.
My career as a photographer began as a means to document my travels and express my love for Asia, says Bishop. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to continue developing this body of work when I was selected to teach English as a second language to students in Vietnam.
Showing the diversity of the various countries of Asia is the ultimate purpose of my work. I have selected this project to launch a career in the visual arts, an experience I had not expected.
Bishop will speak at the Bowie Arts Center on Jan. 18 at 3:30 p.m. and visit with guests at a reception following the lecture.
The Bowie Arts Center, located on Bonner Street on the Erskine College campus, is open Monday through Thursday from 1 to 4:30 p.m., Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. and the first Sunday of each month from 2 to 4 p.m. Admission is free and the public is welcome.
