John Brawley Memorial Concert to be Held at Erskine College Jan. 23

The Erskine College Department of Music will present a concert in memory of Dr. John Gray Brawley, Jr., Harriet Pressly Smith Caldwell Professor of Music, at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 23, in Memorial Hall on the Erskine campus.

John Brawley served Erskine College with dedication and distinction for nearly 40 years. He was the founder of “Sinfonia” and “Pizzazz,” Erskine's two instrumental ensembles. A member of the International Horn Society and the College Music Society, he held degrees from Erskine College, Indiana University, and Yale University.

Brawley inspired generations of students as a classroom teacher and director of musical ensembles and is remembered by his colleagues for his academic and moral leadership. Upon his retirement, he was the senior faculty member at Erskine in length of service.

The concert will feature performances by Sinfonia under the direction of Dr. Stephen Emmons, and the Erskine College Choraleers under the direction of Dr. John Warren. Also on the program will be individual performances by pianist Jenny Shealy, baritone Todd Simpson, and clarinetist Lori Smith, all of whom are music majors and members of the senior class.

Admission to the concert is free. For more information, please call 379-8831.
