Brawley Memorial Concert to be Held at Erskine
College Jan. 23
The Erskine College Department of Music will
present a concert in memory of Dr. John Gray Brawley,
Jr., Harriet Pressly Smith Caldwell Professor of
Music, at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 23, in Memorial Hall on
the Erskine campus.
John Brawley served Erskine College with
dedication and distinction for nearly 40 years. He
was the founder of Sinfonia and
Pizzazz, Erskine's two instrumental
ensembles. A member of the International Horn Society
and the College Music Society, he held degrees from
Erskine College, Indiana University, and Yale
University.
Brawley inspired generations of students as a
classroom teacher and director of musical ensembles
and is remembered by his colleagues for his academic
and moral leadership. Upon his retirement, he was the
senior faculty member at Erskine in length of
service.
The concert will feature performances by Sinfonia
under the direction of Dr. Stephen Emmons, and the
Erskine College Choraleers under the direction of Dr.
John Warren. Also on the program will be individual
performances by pianist Jenny Shealy, baritone Todd
Simpson, and clarinetist Lori Smith, all of whom are
music majors and members of the senior class.
