TIMETABLE · Dr. John L. Carson was named President-Elect of Erskine College and Theological Seminary today by the Board of Trustees. Dr. James W. Strobel will continue to serve as President.
· On June 15, 1998, Dr. John L. Carson will officially become the 13th president of Erskine College and Theological Seminary. Dr. James W. Strobel will become President Emeritus and Special Counsel to the President.
· On October 31, 1998, Dr. James W. Strobel's retirement officially begins. He will continue as President Emeritus of Erskine College and Theological Seminary.
HISTORY · Twelve men have served as president of Erskine College and Seminary since its founding in 1839. The first president, Dr. E.E. Pressly served from 1839-47.
· One president served two terms, Dr. R.C. Grier, who was president of the institution from 1847-59 and from 1865-71. Between that time, Dr. E.L. Patton, perhaps best known for memorizing the entire Bible, served as president from 1859-61. Patton is the president who served the shortest time, two years.
· The Erskine presidency was vacant during the civil war, 1861-65.
· The president serving the longest time was Dr. R.C. Grier II, who served 33 years, from 1921-54.
