Harmony Hicks meets
Ingrid Saunders Jones, Erskine Freshman Wins Coca-Cola First Generation Scholarship Erskine College freshman Harmony Hicks of Townville, daughter of Ms. Amy Heverly and Mr. Robert Hicks, has been awarded the Coca-Cola First Generation Scholarship. Hicks was honored at a ceremony and luncheon for First Generation Scholarship winners held Jan. 30 at the Columbia Museum of Art. "This program was established in 1994, but we have not had it in the state of of South Carolina until this year," said Becky Pressley, Director of Financial Aid at Erskine. "One recipient is selected from each of our state's private colleges. There were 20 recipients statewide. "The Coca-Cola First Generation Scholarship offers a wonderful opportunity to encourage students to reach their goals and their dreams," Pressley said. Speakers for the event, which was sponsored by South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (SCICU) and the Coca-Cola Foundation, included Hon. Inez Tenenbaum, Superintendent of Education, State of South Carolina, and Ingrid Saunders Jones, Chair of the Coca-Cola Foundation. Jim Byrd, president of SCICU, and James R. Morris, Jr., chair of the Board of Directors of SCICU, also delivered remarks. Hicks graduated with honors from Pendleton High School, where she served as class president, was active in Beta Club, French Club, Student Council, and community service organizations, and was named section leader and first chair in symphonic band. The Coca-Cola First Generation Scholarship provides each recipient with $5,000 annually for each of four years of college.
