Erskine
Seminary Graduate O'Shields Launches Local Column
Erskine Theological Seminary graduate Dr. French O'Shields
of Gaffney, pastor of Upper Long Cane Presbyterian Church from 1954-59,
will soon begin writing a guest column for the Abbeville Press
and Banner, according to a May 3 Press and Banner article by Henry
Green.
O'Shields earned the master of divinity degree at Erskine
Theological Seminary in 1954 and also taught at the Seminary for a
time. He holds a graduate degree from Union Theological Seminary.
O'Shields gave up parish ministry in 1982, after 28 years, due to
a voice impairment. He released a book in 1994 entitled Slaying
the Giant: Practical Help for Understanding, Preventing
and Overcoming Depression.
In his column O'Shields will offer "practical advice
with a spiritual bent," Green said, relying on scripture as his source.
A friend of the late Press and Banner editor and publisher
Fred D. West, Jr. and the late Press and Banner journalist Fletcher
Ferguson, O'Shields is no stranger to journalism, having written a
weekly column appearing in 20 newspapers in four states for two years,
according to Green.
