DUE WEST, SC - Erskine College men's head tennis coach Vardon Cox earned his 300th career victory yesterday with the Fleet's victory over Coker College. The win came in his 27th year as coach of the men's team and makes his overall record 300-204.
"I have been fortunate enough to have good guys," said the modest Cox. "There are a lot of good memories and a lot of good relationships. That is the best part."
A lot of players have come and gone in the 28 years he has been at Erskine. He tries to keep in touch with his old players, often seeing and greeting them at Erskine's yearly alumni events.
"I have a lot of positive things in my life because of (the players)," Cox added.
The feat is not one that should go unnoticed, but Cox's quiet demeanor prevents him from 'blowing his own horn.' Many others, however, are more than willing to help put this accomplishment in the place it deserves.
"Our Men's Tennis program has flourished under Vardon's leadership," Said Erskine Athletic Director Chip Sherer. "This will be his 11th straight winning season. Vardon is to be commended for his ability to recruit fine young men who do well in the classroom and also on the court."
Cox is a 1965 graduate of Erskine. He returned to his alma mater in 1969 to begin his amazing reign.
