EBK Weekend ‘Successful’

DUE WEST, S.C. – Erskine College hosted 24 finalists Jan. 7-9 for the prestigious E.B. Kennedy Scholarship. The finalists participated in a round of meals, interviews, and receptions, with Erskine students Mitch Baker, Elijah Lovejoy, Dawn Sagonias, and Jason Tompkins, all E.B. Kennedy Scholars, serving as hosts and assistants during the weekend.

Addressing the students, in addition to the E.B. Kennedy Scholars, were E.B. Kennedy Scholarship Program chair Crosland Stuart of Winter Park, Fla.; Erskine Board of Trustees chairman Bill Patrick of Greenwood; and Erskine Vice President and Dean of the College Dr. Jim Gettys.

Admissions director Jeff Craft and staff members Melanie Doty, Kara Eaves, Gail Gambrell, Kendall Poppell and Cory Young served as hosts during the weekend, and Erskine president and first lady Dr. and Mrs. John Carson welcomed students and members of the Admissions staff into their home on Friday evening. Dr. and Mrs. Jim Gettys hosted the final selection committee on Sunday.

“The EBK weekend went very well,” said Cory Young, Associate Director for Recruiting and Assessment. “All the candidates were outstanding and we wish them the very best wherever they go to school. Many thanks to those who helped make the weekend so successful.”

Admissions counselor Kendall Poppell also counts the weekend a success. “All the finalists seemed to enjoy themselves,” she said. “Many of them spoke to me and told me what a good time they had at Erskine.”

Two winners will be chosen from among the 24 finalists, who were selected from among the semifinalists interviewed in December. The scholarship provides complete funding of tuition, room, board, books, and fees, and is renewable for four years. The value of the scholarship for 1998-99 was more than $60,000.

In addition to Crosland Stuart, this year's interviewers were the Rev. Dr. Clyde McCants, Winnsboro; Mr. Neil Jones, Greenville; Dr. Bright Lowry and Dr. Howard Thomas, of the Erskine College faculty; and Ms. Elise Maynard, Maitland, Florida.

The E.B. Kennedy Scholarships are funded by the Edward C. Stuart Foundation, Inc., in Bartow, Fla., and an E.B. Kennedy Scholarship Fund. In addition to Crosland Stuart, chair, and her father Bill Stuart, secretary, directors of the program are the Rev. Dr. Ron Beard, Mrs. Sandra Gettys, Mrs. Charlene Haynes, Dr. Henry Hollingsworth, Mr. Bill Patrick, and Dr. Gordon Parkinson (Director Emeritus).
