Erskine
Open Provides Fun for All
A foursome from Honea Path fired a 15-under par 57
Tuesday to win the 25th annual Erskine Open captain's
choice golf tournament by two strokes at Hunter's
Creek Golf Club in Greenwood.
Bob Elledge, Gary Allen, Reese Jones and Bobby
Cline teamed to win the tournament, played for the
first time on all 27 holes at Hunter's Creek.
Eddie Wentzky of Anderson won a Bose radio for
hitting a hole-in-one on No. 8 Willow. The par 3
holes each had sponsors offering those who hit a
hole-in-one a prize, including a car. There were also
a number of door prizes awarded, and prizes were
given to the winning foursome.
Finishing second with a 59 was Trey Estes and
Boyce Estes of Columbia, playing with Eric Boetsch
and Gary Boetsch of Fort Mill.
Finishing third and four off the pace with a 61
was Ed Campbell, Hobie Holbert, Tony Burton and Mike
Sprouse, all of Greenwood.
The annual tournament is a fundraiser for the
Erskine Flying Fleet Hall of Fame Banquet, and
several Erskine staff members participated, including
President John Carson, Athletic Director Chip Sherer,
and new coaches Mark Peeler (men's basketball) and
Kevin Nichols (baseball).
It was a great tournament, said
Sherer, who coordinated the event with Erskine Alumni
Director Aldon Knight. Using all 27 holes
allowed for much faster play, and I think the weather
was pleasant for golf. I think everyone had a good
time today.
