The team opened their round with a par on Willow No. 1, then converted eight consecutive birdies to make the turn at 28. On the Maple side, the team put together a string of five consecutives birdies.
The team of Jim Merritt, Jim Holbert, Ed Campbell and Mike Sprouse finished second with a 60, and finishing third with a 62 was the team of Bubba Ross, Al Whiteside, Albert Whiteside and E.L. Weir.
One hundred seventeen alumni and friends of Erskine College in Due West participated in the annual tournament sponsored by the Flying Fleet Club, Erskine's athletic booster club. Proceeds from the tournament help support the annual Flying Fleet Hall of Fame banquet each fall, at which members are inducted into Erskine's athletic hall of fame.
Dr. Harry Stille of Due West, retired professor and baseball coach, and J.H. "Hoss" Nesbitt of Rock Hill, retired educator, were honorary co-chairs of the tournament. Both are members of the Flying Fleet Hall of Fame.
Other winners included Bradley Oates, closest to the pin on Willow No. 3; Sullivan closest to the pin on Maple No. 8; Rhett Sanders, longest drive on Willow No. 4; and Ross Holmes, longest drive on Maple No. 2.
Marvin Bigham of Baltimore, Md., traveled the longest distance to the tournament and Weir was the oldest competitor in the tournament.
