SUBJECT: ERSKINE'S NEWEST VICE PRESIDENT, STAFF FULL OF ENERGY

DUE WEST, S.C. - Dr. StephenB. Sniteman, recently appointed Vice President for Enrollment Management and Technology at Erskine, is a former United States Air Force fighter pilot who has put his intense energy to work and has his newly aligned division aiming high.

"We need to make a better case for Erskine's quality education," says Sniteman, when questioned about his plans for increasing enrollment. "We need to let people know just how valuable an Erskine education isÑand the kind of graduates Erskine is producing."

Sniteman will be assisted by newly appointed Director of Admissions Jeffrey Craft and Director of Financial Aid Rebecca Pressley.

An Erskine graduate who served as an admissions counselor at Erskine from 1989 to 1994 and assistant director of admissions in 1994-95, Craft succeeds Dot Carter, who served as Director of Admissions and Financial Aid until her retirement earlier this year.

Craft's most recent experience was with the University of Georgia in admissions, a job he held for eighteen months before returning to Erskine. "It's an exciting time of change and I am enthusiastic about working with our outstanding team.

"We have hit the ground running with recruiting the class of 2002," says Craft. "It is our responsibility to recruit new students, but we also want to be sure that everybody at Erskine gets involved in the recruitment effort, helping us get the word out about all that Erskine has to offer."

Joining Craft's admissions team this fall are Gail Gambrell, formerly Development secretary, who comes on board as Office Manager, as well as Kendall Poppell and Laurens Ashburn, outstanding Erskine graduates who will serve as Admissions Counselors.

Among the experienced Admissions Office personnel, Cory Young has been named Associate Director of Admissions and Melanie Doty has been named Assistant Director of Admissions. Kathy Hawthorne, also a veteran Admissions staff member, leads the team in using and understanding the Admission Office's new CAMS software package.

Also succeeding Dot Carter, Rebecca Pressley of Honea Path brings to her position seven years' experience in financial aid, both at Anderson College and most recently as associate director of financial aid at Furman University.

"The purpose of financial aid is to make a college education more accessible and affordable," said Pressley. "We will be looking at ways to implement new strategies for awarding financial aid packages in the future to make Erskine accessible and affordable."

Working with Pressley in helping students find ways to fund their Erskine education will be Ward Logan and Judy Smith, who remain on the Financial Aid staff, with Logan being named Associate Director of Financial Aid.

As Vice President for Enrollment Management with responsibility in both admissions and financial aid, Sniteman keeps his focus on prospective, new, and returning students. He is convinced that Erskine is a place where students can "grow as citizens, grow in their faith, and get a job when they graduate."

In his role as Vice President for Technology, Sniteman has inaugurated some changes in computer services at Erskine which should enable students, faculty and staff to enjoy better access to the talents of Franklin Mitchell and Bobby Clarke, whom he calls Erskine's "computer gurus."

The most basic change is that Mitchell will now assume responsibility for all Macintosh support while Clarke takes over PC support. "Networking the campus, the increased use of personal computers by students and faculty, the requirement to equip and maintain the computer labs, and the problems inherent in adopting a new administrative software package" were reasons cited by Sniteman for the computer services changes.

Erskine's newest vice president is a man of action whose mission as he sees it is to "use all our resourcesÑand that is all of us at Erskine working together."

"We're not a big, fragmented university," says Sniteman. "We are Erskine College, all of us committed to a basic goalÑgiving students the chance to grow, not dictating, but providing opportunities."

Erskine College, founded by the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, has been devoted to Christian commitment and excellence in learning since 1839.
