2003 Erskine Open

Four Erskine College graduates from the late 1960s and early 1970s combined to shoot an 18-under-par 54 to win the 29th Annual Erskine Open Golf Tournament Tuesday at Hunter’s Creek Golf Club in Greenwood.

Jim Bradford, Skip Goley and Bob Thompson, all 1971 Erskine graduates, and John Abercrombie of the Class of 1969 won the tournament, finishing one stroke ahead of a team led by 1969 graduate Asa Hatfield that included Jason Allen, Sam Ranzanno Jr. and Sam Ranzanno III.

Hatfield also won both long drive competitions on Oak No. 4 and Maple No. 2.
Other prizes went to Jim Estes for closest to the pin on Maple No. 8 (10 inches), Steve Linder on Oak No. 7 (2 feet, 3 inches) and Jason Peevy on Oak No. 2 (4 feet, 8 inches).

Prior to the shotgun start, John Bolt missed a long putt for $2,500 on the practice green.
Funds raised for the tournament support the Erskine Flying Fleet Hall of Fame Banquet, scheduled this year for Oct. 11 at homecoming.

Erskine Athletic Director Chip Sherer said 142 golfers participated in the tournament, the largest group in more than five years.
