Erskine Welcomes High School Seniors To Erskine Experience Weekend

Twenty-seven high school seniors attended classes today as part of Erskine College's Erskine Experience Weekend. Erskine admissions director Jeff Craft and his staff have conducted this annual event for several years.

"This weekend is for the prospective students — we want to give them a real taste of life at Erskine," said Craft. The visiting students arrived Sunday afternoon and spent Sunday night in the dormitories as guests of Erskine freshmen.

Kara Waters, Assistant Director of Admissions for Campus Events, said, "It’s hard to tell who’s having the most fun, the visitors or their hosts.

"Everybody I’ve talked with seemed to be having a great time. We had a scavenger hunt and a cookout yesterday afternoon, and then last night we had Salt and Light in the Hangar, plus a movie and a coffeehouse." Salt and Light is a Sunday evening college worship service with contemporary music.

Waters said most of the high school students attending the Erskine Experience weekend this year have never visited the campus before. "Part of the reason we have visitation events is to give them a good opportunity to see Erskine for themselves," she said.

"We don’t sell the college at these events —the college sells itself,"said Craft. "But we know there is no substitute for students coming to the campus and seeing firsthand what Erskine is all about."

The Erskine hosts, all first-year students, are either Erskine Ambassadors or members of the Erskine Recruitment Team (ERTs), Waters said.

Craft said a lot of freedom is built into the Erskine Experience weekend —planned activities are offered on Sunday, but on Monday, students are on their own. "This is their day—we give them class schedules and they decide which classes to attend."

Most Erskine professors have opened their classes to visitors today and both professors and coaches are holding office hours to meet with visiting students, Waters said.

"Students, faculty, and staff have all made our visitors feel welcome," Craft said.
