"Winter
Landscape With Farm Scene" by Anna Fall Arts at Erskine – Grandma Moses Painting to be Displayed The fall arts season at Erskine College will feature several fine arts performances, art exhibits, and student performances, and early in the semester an anonymously donated painting by the American artist popularly known as "Grandma Moses" will be on display in the Bowie Arts Center. Erskine Vice President for Development Lee Logan said the painting by Anna Mary Robertson Moses (1860-1961), "Winter Landscape With Farm Scene," given by an anonymous donor in 1999, has undergone extensive restoration by the Atlanta Art Conservation Center and will become a part of the permanent collection at Erskine's Bowie Arts Center. "The donor, who is a collector of works of art and other items of historical interest, knew the painting would require restoration and provided funds for this," said Logan. "We also wanted to frame it appropriately." Logan said he anticipates that the painting, which is acrylic on masonite board, will be available for viewing beginning in approximately two weeks during the Bowie Arts Center's regular hours. Another painting has been given to the school by the same donor. "It was done by Grandma Moses with a young boy who lived near her," Logan said. "We do not yet have that one framed and on display." Other exhibits featured this fall at the Bowie Arts Center are the opening of the 2002 South Carolina Governor's School Traveling Exhibition, set to run through September 16; an Erskine alumni art exhibit, on display Sept. 17 through Oct. 12; and works lent to the center by collector Knox Bridges, focusing on representational art in the classical tradition, on display from Oct. 15 through Dec. 12. The Bowie Arts Center will serve as the setting for several musical events, including a Fine Arts Series performance by the Chris Norman Ensemble Sept. 21; "Shakespeare's Friends and Lovers," presented by Erskine drama and music students, offered Oct. 4-5 and Oct. 7-8; and the eighth annual "South Carolina Colonial Christmas," hosted by the Erskine College Department of Music Dec. 5-7. The Erskine Fine Arts Series will also host the National Players, who will stage Moliere's Tartuffe in Lesesne Auditorium Sept. 23; and the Viennese "Artis Quartet" in Memorial Hall Oct. 31. The Erskine Players will present Little Mary Sunshine, a spoof of romantic operettas, in Lesesne Auditorium Nov. 7-9. The Erskine College Choraleers, along with the Chamber Singers and the Women's Chorale, will offer a concert entitled "Testament of Freedom" Oct. 29 in Memorial Hall and Erskine's instrumental ensemble, Sinfonia, will perform Nov. 19, also in Memorial Hall. A number of student recitals round out the fall music offerings. Hours of operation for the Bowie Arts Center are Monday through Thursday, 1 to 4:30 p.m., Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m., and the first Sunday of each month, 2 to 4 p.m. The Center is also open by appointment.
