Family Day With Silent Auction Set For Nov. 1 Erskine College Family Day is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 1, with parents invited to spend the day with their sons and daughters on campus. Highlights of the day include a silent auction, a shag band called "The Fabulous Shades" providing entertainment on the mall, a preview of an upcoming Erskine Players production, and several athletic events. Bidding on the Parent Association Council Silent Auction begins at 9 a.m., according to Erskine Associate Dean of Students Penny Thomas, who works with the Parent Association Council. The auction concludes at 1:30 p.m. Auction proceeds are used for the betterment of student life on campus. This year's Silent Auction chairmen are Don and Gloria Johnson, Charlotte, N.C., and Ron and Claire Kinney, West Columbia. A preview of "Shakespeare's Music," this fall's Erskine Players production, will be offered from 11 to 11:30 a.m. in the Bowie Arts Center. Erskine faculty members will be on hand to meet with families from 10 a.m. to noon, and a picnic on the mall at 12:30 p.m. will bring students and parents together. A short serenade by the Sweet Fleet and Fleetones, Erskine vocal ensembles directed by Dr. John Warren, will precede lunch. A shag contest on the mall for parents, students, faculty and staff is set for 1 p.m., and the Erskine Equestrian Club Team will give a demonstration at 1:30 p.m., also on the mall. The Flying Fleet men's and women's basketball teams will hold Maroon and Gold Intra-Squad Scrimmages in the Galloway Center, the women beginning at 1 p.m. and the men at 3 p.m. The Erskine women's soccer team will play Pfeiffer at 3 p.m. on Huggins Field, followed by the men's soccer game against Pfeiffer at 5 p.m. Family Day and the silent auction are among a number of activities planned by the Parent Association Council, led this year by Benjamin and Mary Horne of Greenville, who serve as co-presidents.
