The Rev. James Coad Jr., moderator of the General Synod of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, will address returning students as well as the incoming Class of 2001 at the formal opening of Erskine College and Erskine Theological Seminary Sept. 9 in Lesesne Auditorium, marking the 159th year of the College and the 161st year of the Seminary.

Meanwhile, freshmen arrived Aug. 26. On that day a reception was held at the Bowie Arts Center for incoming freshmen, and the annual Soiree for freshmen men and women was held in the evening. The Erskine soccer and cross country men and women begin competition during the month of September. Both soccer teams open on the road and then return for home openers against rival Presbyterian College on Sept. 10. The men are scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. and the women at 7:30 p.m.

Intramural football and a four-man volleyball tournament are also scheduled to begin in September.

Erskine College was founded in 1839 by the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. Erskine Theological Seminary was founded in 1837, also by the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. For more than 150 years, Erskine has been devoted to Christian commitment and excellence in learning.
