Rob Brown
Erskine Freshman Profile: Rob Brown
Rob Brown, a graduate of West Oak
High School, has had an ongoing relationship with Erskine.
Brown has both an older brother and
sister who attended Erskines S4TL (now RYLA) program. The summer
before Browns senior year in high school, he also attended the
RYLA program at Erskine and, he says, "I fell in love with it."
Brown also spent several weekends
at Erskine this past fall. Brown competed in the E.B. Kennedy Scholarship
competition and made it all the way to the finals.
Browns decision to attend Erskine
was most influenced by the great people and the rural atmosphere.
"The people were always so nice, and I love the small town setting,"
he says. Before deciding to come to Erskine, Brown also looked at
Anderson College and North Greenville College. He knew that he wanted
to attend a small school.
During Browns first trip to
Due West, he remembers thinking, "Wow! This is smaller than Westminster!"
Brown also thought it was a beautiful campus. By the end of his first
stay at Erskine, Brown knew Erskine was the place for him. It was
everything he wanted in a college.
Two people have helped define Browns
character, one by his presence and the other by his absence. About
10 years ago, Browns father passed away. Not only the death
of his father, but having to grow up without his father shaped Browns
character. However, Brown was fortunate to have an older brother who
served as his best friend and taught him a lot about how to live his
life as a Christian man.
At Erskine, Brown feels his biggest
challenges will be forming good study habits and being more outgoing.
Brown says that when it comes to meeting new people he can be "a
little shy," but he is looking forward to the friendships he
will make at Erskine.
Brown has decided to major in Christian
Education but is unsure of where his major will take him. He may go
into foreign missions or church vocation. Wherever he goes, Brown
says he "will seek God in all that I do" and wants to be
"a witness for the Lord."
This summer Brown has stayed busy.
He has either been working or traveling. Brown has a part-time job
at Eckerds and has worked at several camps, including RYLA at
Erskine and the band camp at his high school. He has also wanted to
enjoy time with his family before going away to college.
Brown looks forward to coming to Erskine
in late August. He will arrive with his freshman classmates and move
into the dorm Aug. 29.
