Golfers line up for the Allison Open

Erskine Seminary Hosts 2003 Allison Open

The first annual Allison Open, a golf tournament honoring Dr. Leon McDill Allison, Dean Emeritus of Erskine Theological Seminary, was held Sept. 29 at Hunter's Creek Golf and Country Club in Greenwood. Thirty-six players entered the 18-hole Captain's Choice contest, with proceeds given to the Leon McDill Allison Scholarship at Erskine Seminary.

Vice President and Dean of the Seminary from 1959 to 1976, Allison was professor of Historical and Systematic Theology from 1959 to 1980. He was the first full-time professor to teach with an earned doctorate at Erskine Theological Seminary and laid the foundation for the Seminary's gaining accreditation from the Association of Theological Schools.

Allison's son and grandsons, all graduates of Erskine College, participated in the tournament. Robert Allison (Class of 1965), David Allison (Class of 1991) and Mark Allison (Class of 1998) played on the same team. "My father loves Erskine Seminary, and he loves to play golf, so this is a great tribute to him," Robert Allison said.

"Our purpose was to honor Dr. Allison, to benefit Erskine Seminary, and to have some fun," said Erskine Alumni Director Ralph Patterson. "I think we succeeded, and we plan to hold this tournament in the fall each year."

Richard Craft (Erskine College Class of 1968), Johnny Sisk, Don Ingle and Bill Luckadoo tied with Eddie Moore, James Odom, Chip Albert and Leonard Price (Erskine College Class of 1966) for the win, each team scoring a 60.
