Senior Shawn Salari Prepares for $1,000 Halfcourt Shot

Freshman Burk Suits connects on halfcourt shot in 1998 (full story)

DUE WEST, S.C. – “Tony Takes a Shot,” a two-week event on college campuses throughout the country sponsored by Kellogg Food Service, gives students who are not recipients of athletic scholarships a chance to use their athletic talents to win a scholarship. Erskine's ARAMARK Food Service has been promoting this event over the last couple of weeks.

Names of seven qualifying Erskine students whose names were entered in a campus drawing were selected Monday, Jan. 11, according to Assistant Director of Food Services Randy Moore. These seven competed in a “shoot-out” during halftime at the men's basketball game Tuesday, and all seven received participation prizes.

The seven names drawn were Bob Harkins, Kevin Heape, Shawn Salari, Andrew Shogar, Barron Suarez, Burk Suits, and Nickie Williams.

The winner, Shawn Salari, will have one opportunity to make a halfcourt shot during halftime at the men's basketball game Monday, Jan. 18 for a $1,000 scholarship award. Whether the student makes the shot or misses, the contestant's name will be entered in a random drawing with other shoot-out event winners from colleges across the nation.

The student chosen in the drawing from among other shoot-out winners will be flown to a Detroit Pistons game and given a chance to sink a half-court shot during halftime for a prize of $1,000,000. After the game, the contestant will join Grant Hill for an informal “meet and greet” session.

Last year's “Tony Takes a Shot” contest at Erskine was won by freshman Burk Suits of Irmo, who gained his athletic experience playing in a YMCA league. Suits' name was not initially drawn this year, but one of the students whose name was selected had been entered in the drawing by a friend and did not wish to participate. At that point Burk Suits' name was drawn, so he had another chance to win this year.
