With Great Britain's handover of Hong Kong to China occuring on Midnight, June 30th, (12:00 Noon, Eastern Savings Time, Monday), the Erskine public relations department thought it would be appropriate to re-run this article on Cliff Wallace from a couple of month ago. Enjoy!
DUE WEST, S.C. - The Hong Kong
Convention and Exhibition Centre
(HKCEC) Extension (right), a new landmark building on Hong Kong's
harborfront,
has been chosen as the venue for the Hong Kong Change of Sovreignty
Ceremony. Managing Director of HKCEC Management Ltd (HML) is Erskine
alumnus Cliff Wallace, Class of 1968, and he will be present for this
historic event.
"It is especially gratifying to know that the handover ceremony will definitely take place in the Centre around midnight on June 30, 1997," says Wallace. "It is also rewarding to see the enormous amount of effort since 1993 now resulting in the confirmation of the Extension's completion and opening event schedules."
With its distinctively curved roof, a design inspired by the image of a soaring bird, the 1.67 million square-foot Extension is seen as a symbol of Hong Kong's future as Asia's international business hub in the coming century.
The ceremony will take place in the Grand Foyer of the HKCEC Extension. Those attending the event will enjoy panoramic views of the harbor and bright lights of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. The Grand Foyer features a 98-foot high glass wall drop in front of the Grand Hall.
The Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre with its new Extension will be the second largest exhibition and convention facility in Asia. The expanded Centre will boast five exhibition halls, two convention halls, and 52 meeting rooms.
Cliff Wallace was pleased to welcome a
group of Erskine visitors
this past January when physics professor Dr. William F. Junkin III
conducted an Interim term tour of China which included a stop in Hong
Kong. Joining Wallace (fourth from left, with tie) were left to right:
Aaron Spytma, Chris Vestal, Anne Cox, Wallace, Bill Junkin, Crystal
Banks, Peggy Junkin, Dewey DeWitt.
