DUE WEST, SC - Watercolors, collages, and drawings by Clinton resident William P. Jacobs III will be displayed at the Bowie Arts Center on the Erskine College campus. March 18-April 30. The public is invited to a gallery reception on Monday, April 7 from 4:30 to 6 p.m.
Jacobs is a native and and lifelong resident of South Carolina and a 1940 graduate of Presbyterian College. He and his brother Hugh owned and operated Jacobs Press in Clinton. Prior to his retirement, Jacobs began studying watercolor painting, and has since attended workshops and classes with well-known instructors. He has entered several juried art exhibits and has shown in one-person exhibits in several South Carolina locations.
Though most of Jacobs' painting has been done in the United States, he has also traveled to the Greek islands, Russia, England and Scotland, gaining inspiration and increasing his portfolio along the way. His current show, "Passport to an International Exhibition," highlights his depictions of Greek, Russian, English, and Scottish scenes.
Especially moved by the landscape of Greece and the Greek islands, which he visited with a group of watercolorists five years ago, Jacobs returned home "feeling that these islands were special, and that they were put there as a heaven to which all artists would go in the afterlife." Jacobs is also a poet and hopes to publish a volume of his work soon.
The Bowie Arts Center, a 14,000 square-foot facility which opened in 1995, is the most recently constructed building on the Erskine College Campus.
