Dr.
Jim Barrett Addresses Volunteer Leaders and Administrators
Erskine College volunteer leaders and administrators
met at Bonclarken last weekend for a two-day Leadership Retreat, defining
future plans for the college and seminary and reviewing opportunities
for the upcoming year. Members of Erskine's Board of Trustees, Alumni
Board, Board of Counselors, Flying Fleet Board, Parents Council and
Marketing Committee attended, and heard a special wrap-up presentation
from Dr. Jim Barrett, who recently joined the college staff as a development
consultant.
Barrett told the college leaders "what is" and "what
must be" for Erskine, highlighting what he has seen as strengths and
challenges for the college and seminary. "Erskine has a rage for learning,
and a sense of quality about its academic program," Barrett said.
"There is also a substantial commitment to service, and you can see
that Erskine people are making a difference because the institution
is focused on training minds and synthesizing spirits.
"The college functions as a true service corporation,"
Barrett said. "There is also a sense of family and community here,"
Barrett said. "It is very strong, very persuasive and very right."
He added, "There is also a strong faith commitment, being somewhat
dynamic in nature."
Barrett said challenges facing the institution include
retention and recruiting, as well as developing friends and funds.
"Erskine must also carefully select its peers, and continue to find
fresh ways to tell its wonderful story," Barrett said.
