More Than 100 Golfers Tee Off In 30th Annual Erskine Open Tournament

More than 100 golfers, traveling from as far away as Alabama and Kentucky, participated in Tuesday’s 30th annual Erskine Open at Hunter’s Creek Golf and Country Club in Greenwood.

Erskine Athletic Director Chip Sherer said the event was a success on a number of fronts — not the least of which was the cloud cover that kept temperatures moderate for the better part of the day.

The 105 golfers, divided among more than 20 teams and three nine-hole courses, were able to complete the tournament in about four hours.

Winners were named in each of the three groups: Group A, 56, Chuck Ewart, Jim Long, Joe Morgan and Tommy Pendley; Group B, 58, Doug Bishop, Maurice Lopez, Jeff Lopez and Wray Smith; Group C, 61, John Carson, Rob Kelly, Steve Linder and Chris Smith.

Awards were also given for long drive and closest to the pin for selected holes: Long drive (#2 Maple), Matthew Wiggins; Long drive (#6 Oak), William Deck; Long drive (#4 Willow), Bob Thompson; Closest to the pin (#4 Maple), Scott Woodhouse; Closest to the pin (#7 Oak), Wray Smith; Closest to the pin (#3 Willow), Dan McLeod.

The Erskine Open takes place every summer to raise money for the Flying Fleet Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet.
