General Colin Powell, chair of the conference, wrote to Ostrom, "I invite you ... to join the partnership we will forge across this country to improve the lives of children and youth."

President Bill Clinton noted that the Summit "will highlight the outstanding service of Americans and will seek to encourage Americans, particularly young people, to new levels of service."

He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Alzheimer's Association. Sponsors of the Summit include President and Mrs. Clinton, President and Mrs. Bush, President and Mrs. Carter, President Ford, Mrs. Reagan, Mrs. Johnson, and General Colin Powell.
