Erskine Freshmen Arrive For Pre-Orientation

Erskine College welcomed members of the incoming freshman class and their families to campus Aug. 3 for a first taste of college life during Student Pre-Orientation and Parent Orientation, sponsored jointly by Erskine's Admissions and Student Services Offices.

Erskine Admissions Counselor Tobé Frierson reported that 155 students out of a class of 174 attended the event with their families. "That's a really good turnout," she said.

"This is a well-rounded class," said Associate Director of Admissions Cory Young, adding that the students’ hometowns range from "right here in Due West all the way to Colorado, Vermont, and many states in between."

Young said the Class of 2007 is academically strong and active in school, church, and community service. "It's a very solid class that will contribute to the college inside and and outside the classroom," said Young. "I think they represent very well what Erskine stands for and will leave their mark on the campus."

Students and parents heard from Erskine College president Dr. John Carson; Due West Mayor Butch Sain, an Erskine graduate; incoming Student Government Association president Caroline Culp; and rising sophomores Janna Register and Marshall Stein, who spoke to the students about their freshman year at Erskine.

The Rev. S. Dean Turbeville of Hendersonville, N.C., father of incoming freshman and E.B. Kennedy Scholar Rebekah Turbeville, gave the invocation. The day's program included breakout sessions on academics, athletics, financial aid, and student life. Many roommates and their families were seated together during lunch in Moffatt Dining Hall.

This year's freshmen report to campus to move in and attend a weeklong orientation program on Tuesday, Aug. 26. The first day of classes is Monday, Sept. 1. Erskine's Formal Opening is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 9.
