Erskine
Names Maggie Peeler New Women's Basketball Coach
Maggie Peeler has been named head coach of the
Erskine College women's basketball team, according to
Athletic Director Chip Sherer. Peeler replaces Traci
Westmoreland who resigned April 19 after five seasons
at the helm of the Fleet.
Peeler, a native of Louisville, Ky., is a 1996
graduate of Davidson College where she was a
four-year letterman for the Wildcats and two-year
captain.
"I am excited about the opportunity to take
Erskine Women's Basketball to new heights, said
Peeler. It will be a tough challenge, but an
opportunity that I am both ready for and anxious to
begin.
Peeler is in the Davidson record books for the
highest three-point field goal percentage in a game
and ranks second for number of three-point field
goals made in a game. She ranks fifth on the Davidson
career list in three-pointers made and percentage.
Peeler inherits a program that finished 8-18 last
year (6-12 in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic
Conference) and did not qualify for the conference
tournament. The team suffered from a career-ending
knee injury to All-American candidate Valerie Warren
on Jan. 18. Warren, from Greenwood, South Carolina,
graduated as Erskine's fourth all-time scorer and
fourth all-time rebounder.
"With only five returning players for next
season, my first priority is recruiting," Peeler
said. "I'll be spending the upcoming weeks on
the phone and visiting recruits. I'm optimistic that
there are quality student-athletes still available
and will find Erskine a perfect match for what they
are looking for."
Sherer said he was not only excited about having
Peeler on board, but also that with her husband Mark,
current Erskine men's basketball coach, Erskine will
have a husband and wife head coaching tandem.
"Maggie brings a Division I background to our
program, but she also understands the challenges we
face on the Division II level," Sherer said.
"Her passion for the game and personality will
be a tremendous asset to our department. It will be
unique having a husband and wife team leading our two
programs."
