Freshman Profile: Sherese Coleman
Sherese
Coleman of Charleston, a member of this years freshman class
at Erskine College, fits the Erskine student profile with her wide
variety of interests and desire to be in a place that has a lot of
activities with limited outside distractions.
Coleman,
a recent graduate of Saint Andrews Parish High, first heard of Erskine
College at a college program at the Gaillard Auditorium in Charleston.
There she received information about Erskine which piqued her interest
and caused her to decide to visit the Erskine campus.
Colemans
first reaction to Erskine upon driving into Due West was, "Where
is everything?" She found Due West to be a small town that did
not contain much more than the college. By the end of that first visit,
Coleman was hooked. "I have to come here!" she decided.
Though
Coleman considered other schools such as Georgia Southern and Winthrop,
Erskine remained her top choice throughout her college search. Coleman
knew she wanted to attend a school far from home that did not have
too many distractions so that she would be able to concentrate on
her work.
While
at Erskine, Coleman plans to major in Athletic Training. She wants
to be an athletic trainer either for a college or university or for
a professional sports team.
Coleman
also plans to be involved in various extracurricular activities at
Erskine. She is interested in being involved in the yearbook committee,
playing basketball, and participating in drama. Theater has been a
passion of Colemans for some time. She has written several plays,
one of which was entered into a competition for Young Playwrights
of America. Coleman won second runner-up in this competition.
Colemans
work ethic and drive to succeed is due, at least in part, to her relationship
with her older brother, who, though he moved to Houston to live with
their father when Coleman was a small child, was always there for
her, encouraging her to go to college and to always do her best.
Coleman
is looking forward to being on campus and meeting the other Erskine
students. She believes she is fairly easy to get along with, and generally
makes friends easily. But she is a little anxious about settling in
to college life and being on her own for the first time.
For
now, Coleman is busy working, saving money, and preparing for college.
