Dr. D. Parker Young

From the baseball fields at Erskine College, to the higher education classrooms at the University of Georgia, Dr. D. Parker Young has been laying down the law for more than 40 years. The hard-hitting first baseman and pitcher left Erskine and eventually landed in Athens, Ga., where he is recognized today as one of the top legal professors at the graduate level.

Young attended Erskine on a baseball scholarship. The southpaw hurler was known for his control on the mound, and as a first baseman he hit over .300 in a season for the Flying Fleet.

"I was awarded an athletic scholarship for playing baseball, without which I do not believe that I would have been able to attend college," Young said. "I consider my education and experiences at Erskine to be the key to whatever success I may have obtained."

Like many students afforded the opportunity to obtain an Erskine education on scholarship, Young recalls the emphasis the Erskine Experience had on his life.

"My life was truly changed at Erskine," he said. "The individual attention that I received and the self-concepts and leadership I learned, all in a Christian academic setting, are the things that have truly made a difference in my life.

"That sense of belonging in the Erskine family that I felt as a student is still with me today,Ó Young said. "I am eternally grateful for what Erskine has done for me."

Young currently is Professor of Higher Education and Graduate Coordinator in the Institute of Higher Education at the University of Georgia. He is a native South Carolinian, and received his undergraduate degree from Erskine in 1955.

His master's degree was received from Appalachian State University and his doctorate from the University of Georgia. He has been at the University of Georgia since 1968, where he has been cited for excellence as a teacher.

Dr. Young is a past President of the National Organization on Legal Problems of Education. He has served on the Board of Directors of NOPLE as well as the American Association of University Administrators.

In 1985 he was the recipient of the Outstanding Contribution to Literature or Research Award by the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators. In 1991 the Association of Student Judicial Affairs created the D. Parker Young Award, to be given annually, to recognize the outstanding scholarly contribution of an individual in the area of higher education law and judicial affairs.

Dr. Young has served on the Erskine College Board of Trustees. He has authored many books, such as The Yearbook of Higher Education Law, monographs, articles and other publications in the area of higher education law. He is contributing and consulting editor for several publications including The College Students and the Courts, and The College Administrator and the Courts.

He also writes a continuing column on legal issues for the National Association of Academic Affairs Newsletter. Dr. Young has been invited to address numerous higher education organizations and groups on the topic of legal issues in higher education.

Dr. Young is married to Joy Parrish Young, a 1956 Erskine graduate, and their son Cory, who graduated from Erskine in 1988, is currently an admissions administrator at the college. The Youngs' other son, Douglas, is a Georgia graduate.
