MOZART REQUIEM PRESENTED IN MEMORIAL HALL AT ERSKINE COLLEGE

DUE WEST, SC - Memorial Hall at Erskine College will be the site of a presentation of the Mozart Requiem, K. 626 at 8 p.m. on April 15. The combined choral ensembles of Erskine College and Charleston Southern University will form the 100-voice chorus for this concert which will be performed with orchestra and a contingent of guest soloists from across South Carolina.

This performance is in memory of Dr. David G. Phillips IV, a Due West native and alumnus of Erskine College. Dr. Phillips was for many years a professor of piano and musicology at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. While there, he had contact with students at the university from the 1950s through the 1990s. Several of these students will be involved in the performance. Dr. Phillips' widow, Ruth Phillips, his stepmother, Winnie Phillips, and other family members are expected to be present for the performance.

The April 15th performance is the 1997 Raymond Brock Significant Performance. This is the fifth annual performance in a series of choral concerts named for the Rev. Mr. Brock who served churches in South Carolina and, late in his career, served as Director of Development for the American Choral Directors Association.

Performers in the concert include the Erskine College Choraleers and the Charleston Southern University Concert Choir. The conductor for the performance will be Dr. J. Porter Stokes, Director of Choral Activities at Erskine.

Dr. Valerie Bullock is Director of Vocal Studies at Charleston Southern University. She directs the Concert Choir and will serve as the alto soloist. The other three soloists are Deirdre Francis, soprano, Walter Cuttino, tenor, and Bruce Gentry, bass. Ms. Francis is an adjunct professor of voice at both Erskine and Anderson Colleges. Dr. Cuttino is on the faculty of the University of South Carolina after a 15-year professional vocal career in Germany. Mr. Gentry's experience includes an extensive performing career as both singer and actor.

Admission is $5.00 adults and $3.00 for youths 18 and under. Erskine students and faculty are admitted free with ID. Seating is limited and there are to be no advance sales of tickets.
