Erskine Students To Take Photographic Tour Of United States

Three Erskine College students will be taking a photographic tour of the United States when Winter Term kicks off in January 2004.

Winter Term is a four-week period of concentrated study in one area. It offers time to focus on a unique subject either in an on-campus setting or elsewhere.

Students are given opportunities to study one subject in-depth, to explore an entirely new field, to experience a foreign culture, or develop creativity in ways not possible in the conventional semester system.

Courses generally fall into one of the following categories: on-campus study, off-campus travel, independent study, study on another campus, and pre-professional externships off campus.

Juniors Ben Stoner and Allen Taylor, both of Greenville, and Caleb Gamble of Anderson will take off Jan. 2 for points around the nation.

The group will travel to the Outer Banks in North Carolina on the first day of the trip, followed by stops in Washington, D.C., New York City, Boston, Nantucket, Mass., Chicago, St. Louis, Denver, Vail, Colo., Seattle, San Francisco, Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, Dallas and New Orleans before returning home Jan. 26.

The students will spend two days in several locales.

They explained how they came up with the idea on their Web page, http://acad.erskine.edu/facultyweb/wjunkin/stoner/phototour.htm

“We were trying to think of an idea for January term to escape Due West, and Caleb came up with the idea of a massive road trip,” the Web site says. “We started to play with the idea, wondering what we could do on this road trip. We realized that all three of us really enjoy the art of photography and would love to hone our skills by taking pictures of beautiful landscapes and intriguing architecture across the U.S.

“So the project was born: drive around the entire country, visiting the major cities and a few of the breath-taking views of our great country, and take lots of pictures,” they wrote.

Sharon Linnehan, an assistant professor in Erskine’s art department, and Ben Jeffords, an associate professor in Erskine’s business department, are the faculty sponsors of the trip.

Dr. Bill Junkin, dean for learning and technology, is the faculty adviser for the Web page that the students have put together to document their trip.

The students plan to keep Web page visitors updated on the progress of their journey by keeping a journal and displaying some of the photographs they take during the trek. The site can best be viewed using Internet Explorer.
