DUE WEST, S.C. - Ah, yes. Summer
camp. Swimming, sports, meeting friends, computer programming....
Computer programming?
Of course RISE (Research In Science at Erskine) is not your usual summer camp.
Focusing on scientific research, the three-week program gives rising high school sophomores, juniors and seniors a chance to use equipment and technology normally available only to college students. Students chosen for RISE this year arrived at Erskine College July 6, and the program concludes July 25.
Under the supervision of Erskine faculty members Dr. Janice Haldeman, Professor of Biology, and Dr. William F. Junkin, Professor of Physics, students will choose to concentrate in biotechnology or computer interfacing.
This year's RISE students include 24 in Biotechnology with 13 focusing on computers. (Pictured are some of this year's RISE students working on programing in Dr. Junkin's physics lab.)
Dr. Junkin, 1995 South Carolina Governor's Professor of the Year, directs the program. He has conducted RISE programs at Erskine since 1977. Dr. Junkin is also the recipient of the 1993 South Carolina Governor's Award for Excellence in Science Awareness.
