DUE WEST, S.C. - Erskine Theological Seminary conferred 57 degrees to
graduates in five degree programs during commencement ceremonies that
featured an address from Bishop John Adams of the African Methodist
Episcopal Church.
Adams told the graduates of the
vulnerabilities they will face in life,
vulnerabilities that have been prevalent throughout the history of the
world and contemporary vulnerabilities.
"Vulnerabilities are very personal," Adams said. "Everything is
vulnerableÑ your life, your health, your reputation, your resources, your
relationships, your career, your marriage, your family, even your
sanity.
"We need a clear understanding of the power and willingness of God to
deliver us," he told the graduates. "You need to reassure the people you
preach to that no matter how hopeless the situation, God's grace is
sufficient."
God does not take a day off, Adams said. "He is always there, He is
always true and He always understands. God is always able to deliver."
A native of Columbia, Adams was educated in the public schools of
Columbia, he earned his bachelor's degree from Johnson C. Smith
University and went on to Boston University School of Theology,
receiving the S.T.B. and S.T.M. degrees. He has undertaken further study
at Harvard University and Union Theological Seminary.
Kitty Holtzclaw, President of
the Seminary student body, addressed her
classmates and said that Erskine had been a blessing to them all.
"During our time here we have been nurtured, encouraged and forgiven,"
she said. "Erskine will be a blessing to us for a lifetime."
Erskine President Dr. James W. Strobel told the graduates that Erskine
Seminary degrees are a challenge. "It is a challenge that is met by
students and their caring families, and the outstanding faculty and
staff at Erskine Theological Seminary."
Erskine Board of Trustees Chairman William B. Patrick of Greenwood
congratulated the graduates and said that God had given each of them the
talent and ability to succeed. "And you have succeeded." he said.
Also during the ceremony it was announced that former Seminary Dean Dr.
Randall T. Ruble, who retired last year and is currently engaged in a
study at Princeton University, will be named Dean Emeritus of the
Seminary.
