ERSKINE
STUDENTS AND FACULTY FEATURED AT MILLIKEN'S
SHOWCASE 99
On February 3 the Independent Colleges and
Universities of South Carolina (ICUSC) held
"Showcase 99" in Spartanburg.
"Showcase 99" was the Undergraduate
Research Symposium funded through ICUSC by The
Milliken Foundation, The Jolley Foundation, The F.W.
Symmes Foundation, The Hoffmann-La Roche Foundation,
and The Fluor Foundation. The Milliken Company hosted
"Showcase 99" at their research center in
Spartanburg.
Two Erskine students, Meredith Huey, a behavioral
science major, and Melissa Sprenne, a biology major,
presented their research at "Showcase 99."
Meredith worked with Marilyn Dudley-Rowley, and
Melissa conducted her research with Jan Haldeman.
Meredith's presentation was "Off-normal
Behaviors and Performance Among Team Personnel in
Space and Polar Environments: the Effects of Size and
Heterogeneity of Crew and Mission Duration."
Melissa's topic was "Infection of Camellia
Tissues with Agrobacterium Tumefaciens." Both
students made excellent presentations.
The Undergraduate Research Symposium's deadline
for proposals for the next cycle was February 19. At
least three Erskine teams submitted grants for the
next cycle of undergraduate research. Students from
other private colleges and universities received
research grants for work in the humanities.
