Clemson's
Coach Shyatt Speaks to RYLA Students at Erskine
Clemson's
Head Men's Basketball Coach Larry Shyatt told a group
of about 90 high school students at Erskine College
Monday that the greatest gift in life is the
gift of giving.
Shyatt,
speaking at the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA)
program hosted by Erskine this week, encouraged the
high school students to give of their talents as
leaders.
As
a leader you must share your abilities not only
during this week at RYLA, but beyond, Shyatt
said. Education is for everybody, all the
time.
Shyatt
warned that being a leader can be difficult, but told
the students to continue to work to be the best
leaders they can be.
Shyatt
advised students to live their lives as an example.
He emphasized how his coaching style is to develop
better people, not better players. Shyatt said he
works to help ready people for the game of
life, not just the game of basketball.
Shyatt
exemplifies how discipline can lead to success. He
implements a rigid routine for each of his players
including mandatory breakfasts, individual one-on-one
workouts, strength training, and study time. This
program implements Shyatt's believe that,
Practice does not make perfect, but perfect
practice makes perfect.
RYLA is
a week-long camp for selected high school students
that demonstrate service, academic excellence, and
leadership potential. It is coordinated by Ralph and
Lynn Patterson of Due West.
