SI Leaders Honored At Appreciation Dinner

Erskine Supplemental Instruction (SI) leaders were treated to an appreciation dinner Sunday at the Due West home of Erskine SI Director Jeanne Bell, an Erskine alumna and former financial aid counselor.

"I wanted to recognize these students for all their hard work and commitment to SI," said Bell. SI leaders, or tutors, are students recommended by professors who attend all class sessions, take notes, and complete assigned readings for a given course, she said.

Supplemental instruction sessions cover class discussions, lectures and content. Also included are test preparation, note-taking and appropriate academic study skills.

"Every student is encouraged to attend SI for classes in which they are enrolled," Bell said. "The sessions are free of charge."

Students who take advantage of SI sessions often benefit through improved academic performance, and may discover the teaching talents of their peers. Freshman Ellen Dawson of Gainesville, Ga., praised SI leader Patti Ward, a junior from Tampa, Fla. "She knows the information and is great at what she does," said Dawson.

Supplemental Instruction leaders also realize benefits from their efforts. Preparing and leading SI sessions is time consuming but can be rewarding, according to Ward.

"I really enjoy watching the students learn difficult concepts and reap the rewards of the program," she said. "Being a psychology SI leader has helped me stay up to date on concepts and theories and has helped me prepare for graduate school."

Bell said she supervised 25 SI leaders this spring. SI subjects offered included Art, Accounting, Biology, Chemistry, English, French, Math, New Testament, Psychology, Spanish and World Civilization.
