Freshmen
were greeted by a welcome sign as Freshmen Are "Saved By The Bell" At This Year's Soiree The Erskine College Soiree held in Moffatt Dining Hall last night gave freshmen a chance to show off their best 1980s looks at the school's traditional opening dance, this year with a "Saved by the Bell" theme, based on the 1980s television comedy set in a high school. "This is fun," said Kelli Lamb of Lake Wales, Fla. "We all grew up watching 'Saved By the Bell' so it's perfect." Lamb's date, coincidentally sharing her surname, was Jarvis Lamb of Columbia, who said he enjoyed the atmosphere. "I met Kelli at pre-orientation and it was cool to get her as a date," said Jarvis Lamb. Dates for the soiree are chosen by a random drawing, this year held in Carnegie as freshman women gathered in the lobby while freshman men waited upstairs for their names to be called. "The selection process is different," said Jonathan Harling of Fort Mill. "I knew about it but I didn't know what to expect. I got a wonderful date." Hannah Collier of Columbia, who was Harling's date, said, "This is different. It's creative and fun. I'm really enjoying myself." Dressed as a character from the evening's featured sitcom, J. Lawrence Waring of Florence, sporting a wig, said proudly, "I am Screech. Everyone had an infatuation with Zach, but Screech was always my hero." Waring said he was glad he had the opportunity to meet new people. "I think it is really cool that they have a theme for the soiree," said Tabitha Cook of Charleston. "It was a lot of fun dressing up." Harmony Hicks of Townville said, "It's not what I expected. I thought it would be scary but it wasn't. It was fun." The
freshmen moved in yesterday and began a week of orientation that will
be supplemented by social acitivities, including a karaoke night and a
progressive dinner.
