JANUARY
4 (Through February) Snapshots from Asia, Bowie Arts Center
Elizabeth Bishop, currently a classroom teacher at Union High School, Union, S.C., presents an exhibit of photographs she has taken while traveling in Asia as a Rotary International Fellow and a member of a Fulbright-Hayes group. Says Bishop, Showing the diversity of the various countries of Asia is the ultimate purpose of my work. I have selected this project to launch a career in the visual arts, an experience that I had not expected.

Elizabeth Bishop, whose photography exhibit Snapshots from Asia is on display Jan. 4 through the month of February, will speak in the lecture hall of the Bowie Arts Center and visit with guests at a reception afterwards.

Readers' Theater performances will be based on a Winter Term course. Times to be announced.
FEBRUARY
2 8 p.m. The Marriage of Figaro, Lesesne Auditorium
The National Opera Company presents Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro. The National Opera Company's productions are fully staged and costumed, performed with piano accompaniment, and feature a troupe of 12 singers chosen by nationwide audition. The touring troupe of the Fletcher School of the Performing Arts, the National Opera Company has toured the United States since 1955, always singing in the English language. All seats $5. 9-27 Juried Youth Art Show, Bowie Arts Center
The South Carolina Arts Education Association (SCAEA) sponsors this exhibit from the western region. An exit reception will be held Feb. 27 from 2-3:30 p.m.

Student Recitals feature Erskine music majors and minors performing in fulfilment of curriculum requirements.
23 8 p.m. Faculty Recital (Presidential Series), Memorial Hall
The Department of Music features Dr. Rhea Jacobus, flutist, and Dr. Matthew Manwarren, pianist, in recital.
25 8 pm American String Quartet, Memorial Hall
With recordings of more than a dozen works to their credit, radio and television broadcasts in 13 countries, and recent performances with the Montreal Symphony, the New York City Ballet and the Philadelphia Orchestra, the musicians of the American String Quartet have served as the resident ensemble for the Van Cliburn International Piano Conservatory. They served on the faculty of Peabody Conservatory for 10 years, and initiated its program of quartet studies. Their performances have been described as highly distinctive and communicative by the Los Angeles Times and as characterized by fresh and engaging interpretations by the Houston Chronicle. Indigenous ceramics from Old Edgefield Pottery will be on display, including reproductions by potter Stephen Ferrell.
1 (Through March) Abbeville County Public Schools Art Show
March is Youth Art Month, and the Bowie Arts Center will celebrate with the annual upstairs display of art works from Abbeville County public school students.
