Erskine
Alumni Receive Sullivan Awards
Grace Lucile Garrison Hill, a 1952 Erskine College
graduate, received the Mary Mildred Sullivan Award
and 1949 graduate and Erskine professor emeritus Dr.
Lowry P. Ware received the Algernon Sydney Sullivan
Award on April 29 at the Erskine Alumni Association
meeting. The Sullivan Awards are presented each year
to a man and woman who have shown a spirit of
love for and helpfulness to their fellow human
beings.
St. Paul said `I am a debtor' and so are we
to the people here, said Hill, referring to
faculty and staff members at Erskine during her
college years. They cared about us and inspired
us. I see the revitalization of our alma mater under
the leadership of President Carson. We need to be
building bridges not for ourselves but for those who
come after us.
When I found out that Grace Lucile Hill was
to make some remarks first, I knew they would be
good, so I decided I would just associate myself with
her remarks, said Ware. I do appreciate
this award.
Erskine Alumni Association president Sarah
Wightman Brice of Greenville, a 1971 graduate,
congratulated the Sullivan Award winners, and gave a
special thanks to Ware, who left his Erskine teaching
post for a short time during the 1950s to complete
his doctorate, leaving a vacancy on the faculty
filled by her father, Dr. Joseph Wightman. If
it hadn't been for you, my father might not have come
to Erskine at all, she said. Wightman
eventually became college and seminary president.
