DUE WEST, S.C. - The Erskine Players are preparing their fall
play, The Way of the World, written by William Congreve in 1700,
for 8
p.m. performances in Lesesne Auditorium Oct. 30 and 31 and November 5, 6
and 7.
According to Erskine professor Dr. Brad Christie, who is directing the play, the Restoration drama presents a real challenge to the players. "This is a big project, a difficult piece, a real stretch for the Erskine Players," says Christie. "I've long wanted to direct a Restoration comedy, and our program now has the horses to do it, but it is taxing all of their considerable talents and skills." The Way of the World will offer a challenge to the audience, too, since "most of the action occurs in dialogue," says Christie. "Once people get used to the style (this is not TV or the movies) I think they will thoroughly enjoy stepping back to a time of great social grace and verbal charm and wit." The production will be done "in period style" complete with "gorgeous costumes, showy make-up, and colorful lighting." Christie describes the play as "classic Restoration drama, featuring husbands and wives who cannot stand each other, lovers who cannot stand to be without each other, a middle-aged widow who would love to be a young lover again, and a bevy of comic hangers-on and household servants to keep the action lively." Christie urges the audience to come early to the theater and visit with one another, as was the custom of Restoration theater patrons. Tea and chocolates will be served during intermission. Admission is free and the public is welcome. |
