From the President

Erskine students gather to pray for the VT community.

Dear Students, Parents and the entire Erskine Community,

The Virginia Tech tragedy earlier this week was a wake-up call for many institutions of higher learning, including Erskine. In view of that incident, it is clear that we at Erskine need to review our security procedures. Procedures are already in place, but more may need to be added.

I have appointed a campus-wide committee to review issues at Erskine. Mr. Gregory W. Haselden, Vice President for Finance and Operations, is chair of the committee. In addition to Erskine's own security chief, I have arranged for Abbeville County Sheriff Charles Goodwin, Abbeville County Director of Emergency Services Steve McDade and Due West Chief of Police James Smith to meet with the committee. The committee will include Student Government President Sarah Hope and other students.

We will do everything to protect those of us in the Erskine community from such tragedies. I think the best approach is to continue to emphasize Christian values which include the affirmation of the value of community and respect for others, especially those who may disagree with us. A mass communication system is also being considered. We ask for your prayers for those at Virginia Tech and for the Erskine community.

Thank you for entrusting your students to our care.

Sincerely,

Randall T. Ruble
President
