Student Success

“There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.—Colin Powell

“The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty.”—Proverbs 21:5

The goal of Student Success is to empower each student with the necessary tools to become successful in all walks of life through a Christ-centered education. We believe three principles are essential for any student to be successful:

Preparation

Any successful person will tell you that if you fail to plan, then plan to fail. This is particularly true for college students who are away from home for the first time, and who now face more challenging academic trails then they ever have before. We seek to communicate to students that while having a long-range plan is essential, the best long-term plans will not be achieved if there is not a daily, detailed plan for reaching those larger goals.

Perspiration

Once you have planned to work, then you need to work the plan. We seek to show student how even the best of plans will come to nothing if the plan is not properly executed. This will require hard work and long hours of studying. But we want to show students how God will bless their efforts when they work hard to glorify Him in all of their endeavors.

Practice

We want students not just to have success at Erskine; we want our students to build habits of success that will carry them through all stages of life. To that end, we wish to show every student who comes to Erskine that good habits are formed through the process of trial and error. Every student needs to reflect on their successes and their failures, in order to discover how they should best use the skills that God has given them.

Our Department of Student Success provides a student success coach for students in order to help them implement the three P’s in their college career. Our Success Coach serves students in two primary ways:

  • Erskine Life Coach: First and second year college students particularly experience a wide range of emotions: homesickness, roommate issue, social transition from high school to college, and stress over grades and finances. Our Success Coach inspires, encourages, and helps transition to the college environment and encourages them to get involved in campus ministry, intramural sports, and other clubs and activities.
  • Erskine College Liaison: Our Success coach assists students in making connections with faculty and staff at the college. Student Success also refers students to our campus minister, Career Services, Campus life, Counseling Services, Financial Aid, and other offices on campus so that each student will find the information and support they need while at Erskine.

In addition to our Student Success Coach, our Coordinator of Student Success & Retention (CSSR)is also available as a resource to our students. Our CSSR is able to provide tutoring for students who are in need of academic assistance and also helps to advise students through the difficulties of an academic career.
