Erskine College Recycling Program

The Erskine College Recycling Program officially began in Feb 09. It serves as a catalyst for the President’s vision of developing a green campus over the next 3-5 years. We currently feel we have the support of students, faculty and staff, and the Due West community in implementing a robust recycling initiative that focuses on recycling the enormous volume of plastic and aluminum containers consumed on campus during the academic sessions, athletic events, and summer camps.

Our overall goals include:

  1. Recycling paper and cardboard, recycling plastic and aluminum containers
  2. The composting of yard waste
  3. Recycling of motor oil and food service waste oil
  4. Recycling awareness/education program.

Recycling Paper, Plastic and Aluminum

Plastic and Aluminum
Our recycle program will involve locating Rubbermaid Slim Jim (23 gallon) and Square (35 Gallon) containers in each academic, office, and dormitory building to collect plastic bottles and aluminum cans. These containers will have ‘bottle and can’ tops (round holes). When a container is full, the liners will be pulled and loaded onto the trailer by our custodial staff as they remove trash from each building. The bags will be transported on the trailer to the recycle center where they will be emptied into the receptacles provided by our recycling vendor.

Paper
We will place desk side containers at every office desk. A recycled paper bin will be placed in most hallways or stairwells as appropriate.
These bins are for paper of all types – to include copier, printer, and notebook paper. Envelopes, newspaper and magazines are recycled as well.

Responsibilities
The Facilities Dept. will be responsible for getting the bins in place, emptying the bins, and transporting the materials to the recycle center. ALL other responsibilities are on the users of this campus, and the primary responsibility is to place ALL waste in it’s proper container – trash in trash cans, aluminum in aluminum recycle bins, etc.

Cardboard
Cardboard will be broken down by the user/recipient in the receiving areas on campus, and will be picked up by the custodial staff as needed, using the golf cart and trailer for transportation to the cardboard dumpster at the recycle center.

Program Overview

ARAMARK Higher Education is committed to help Erskine in achieving a Sustainable Campus through educating the campus, recruiting leaders and volunteers, and marketing future campaigns to drive a culture change where recyclable materials will be separately collected and removed by a dedicated and trained staff. Our goal is to serve as a partner with every student, faculty member and staff member on the Erskine College campus to engage in environmental stewardship.

We anticipate strong growth of our program and commodities as we develop experience and expertise. Our long-term goal is to evaluate our waste streams to determine the methods for reducing, reusing and recycling all feasible materials. Additionally, our facilities department is currently reviewing purchasing processes and establishing construction and maintenance practices that follow LEED criteria.

Recyclemania

In 2010 we participated in Recyclemania as a benchmark competitor to get a feel for the program and establish the processes needed to compete with other colleges and universitries around the US. In 2011 we are enrolled as a competitor and we are aiming to be the top campus in SC!
